Our Founder

Mahelet/ማህሌት

My love for coffee began in Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia, where my parents, teachers devoted to community service, moved our family from the city to a rural village. There, coffee was never just a drink. I watched it grow in the high mountains, pass through careful hands, and come alive in the coffee ceremony, a sacred rhythm of roasting, brewing, and gathering.

Those ceremonies lasted hours. Neighbors shared stories, debated ideas, laughed, and listened deeply. Coffee created space for connection, reflection, and belonging.

When I moved to the U.S., I brought those high-altitude beans and centuries-old traditions with me, carrying their history, care, and sense of community across continents. That inspiration became the spark for Zoma Coffee Roaster.

Zoma means “wholeness” in Amharic. We source exceptional Ethiopian beans and roast them with intention, highlighting their vibrant, fruity character and honoring the people behind every harvest. But Zoma is more than coffee. It is an invitation to slow down, gather with purpose, and be part of a centuries-old tradition.

Each cup connects you to something ancient and human. Whether brewing at home or joining us in person, Zoma welcomes you to a community where coffee sparks conversation, creates memories, and brings people together

Our Roaster

At Zoma Coffee, roasting is more than just a solo craft it's a collaborative effort that brings together skill, experience, and passion. Michel, who has been roasting since 2009, plays a key role in bringing Zoma's coffee to life. With experience owning his own roastery and working with both large and small roasters, Michel brings a wealth of knowledge to our team.

His expertise extends beyond roasting; Michel has been an international judge at the Força Café competitive auction for small Brazilian farms and won silver in the 2016 Swedish roasting competition. Trained as a chef in France, he also has extensive experience in restaurants, catering, and cafés across Europe and the United States.

Michel views roasting as a craft that blends science and technique with art and intuition. He’s passionate about sharing his knowledge and collaborating with others to refine the coffee experience.
