Meet the Founder

Mahelet

My story begins in Ethiopia, where I was born to parents who were educators, teaching high school and serving at the local church. They sacrificed their urban lifestyle to relocate our family to a rural area in the southern part of the country where they served others socially, academically, and spiritually.

This move was the beginning of my coffee journey. I was fascinated to see the entire coffee making process- from planting to roasting to brewing- at the nearby farms in a region called Yirgacheffe. But the most mesmerizing experience of all was the coffee ceremony: lasting three hours, people would come together to connect and engage in nurturing conversations about politics, sports, and social events, filling the air with laughter.

Upon moving to the USA, I saw that coffee was treated differently, hastily consumed on the go and used as a stimulant for productivity. This sparked my desire to create a space where people could authentically embrace the rich complexities of coffee, fostering heightened connections and meaningful interactions.

Hence, Zoma Coffee Roaster was born—a name that symbolizes wholesomeness. My goal is not just to provide exceptional coffee beans, but also, to foster a space where individuals can come together to share passions, exchange ideas, and create memories that lay the foundation for something beautiful and greater. Join me on this transformative journey where the love for coffee transcends the cup, acting as a catalyst for building meaningful connections and empowering one another.

Kaldi's Legacy

Ethiopia is widely attributed as the birthplace of coffee. Legend has it that in the 9th century, a goat herder named Kaldi discovered coffee when he witnessed his goats experience a mysterious boost of energy after eating a couple red berries from a nearby tree. Kaldi decided to taste the berries himself. To his surprise, he also felt refreshed and reenergized. Kaldi introduced the berries to a local monk who ingeniously crafted a beverage, marking the inception of coffee.
